UTCWI is first and foremost, a seminary to which Participating Churches send for training, candidates whom they have selected with a view to ordination. Many students also come to study at the UTCWI from non-participating communions. It is supported and maintained by the Participating Churches all of which are indigenous. It receives no government subsidy. Its recurrent expenditure is met by the Churches, contributions from overseas donors and by fees from independent students.

The UTCWI co-operates with the Columbia Theological Seminary in Georgia U.S.A. in offering a Doctor of Ministry degree. This allows experienced ministers who have not had the opportunity for further academic development to pursue studies while remaining in the pastorate. Most of the courses are taught at UTCWI by lecturers both from Columbia and the UTC. The College is also engaged in Exchange Programmes with institutions in North America which are proving to be of immense benefit to the institution as well as to the students who have gone on exchange. It also serves as host for students from the schools of the Atlanta Theological Association who come to Jamaica every summer for their work experience in ministry. Various other groups of overseas students also come to UTCWI for experiences in contextual education.
